Pretty much. Gold is a time-tested store of value. But it is not a solid investment. (stores of value and investments are not the same thing)

Gold is a solid store of value. That’s about it. It isn’t a terribly good investment as it just doesn’t gain value very fast compared to inflation. But, as I said, it is a solid store of value, so if that is what you are looking for, it isn’t a bad option.
If you want to invest, you are better off with index funds held over the long term.
invested a lot in gold under the belief that in the event of like complete societal collapse
If that happens, a better investment is to make yourself as self-sufficient as possible. Have a way to generate power (solar + batteries), acquire water (well water), sewage (leech field), stored food (just extra cans of food you normally eat), acquire food (a rifle and somewhere deer exist), security (that same rifle).
None of that is unreasonably expensive or hard to get. But all of those are what you would want if you are worried about societal collapse.

Canada does not consider the US an enemy. gestures at the giant piles of things and tries that the two countries have/do together

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•why are they pushing kpop demon hunters so badly? Who makes money off this new group?
40·9 days agoYeah, I’m confused on why they wouldn’t push KPop Demon Hunters. People like it.
It’s also really funny that Disney blamed their fans for not supporting original content after Elio flopped. Then KPop Demon Hunters comes crashing in and is popular as fuck.

Technology@lemmy.world•Windows 11's adoption is much slower compared to Windows 10, claims DellEnglish
1·10 days agoYeah, some people get really defensive when you suggest they can get all the things they are asking for, and all they have to do is stop giving money to user-hostile developers. And saying kernel-level anti-cheat is hostile to the user is a massive understatement. Why would you defend Saudi Arabia having kernel-level access to your computer just to play a game? (It’s crazy that that statement isn’t even a joke in the context of EA.)
I understand if someone decides not to take the suggestion, but it is still a reasonable suggestion to make.

3·11 days agothe old-style devices and printers menu is still in the OS, you just have to dig for it a bit, and it works 1000x better.
For the last 13 years this has been the most infuriating part of the incomplete control panel migration. I find myself struggling to use the new settings, and having to then resort to digging for the old ones that actually have the option I need.
Win 11 finally pushed me over the edge with ads and spying. But I still have to deal with Windows at work.

I actually switched years ago because I didn’t want to pay for MS Office.

41·12 days agoHave you seen any traction with Framework in the corporate space? They are mostly marketed at individuals, but since you specifically mention people wanting higher quality machines, Framework fits the bill.

It was possible to skip 8 and go straight from 7 to 10. You could even use the same PC.
This time around, Microsoft is forcing Windows 11 as the only option, forcing people to throw away their machines, and it is backfiring on them. People are rejecting it and the competition (Linux) has never been as good as it is today.
The executive also noted that 500 million PCs don’t meet Windows 11’s system requirements
So much unnecessary e-waste. I never want to hear about how ‘green’ or ‘sustainable’ Microsoft is again.
For an external drive? I guess I have never experienced that since external drives are already pretty slow.
Yeah, you will generally have a better time with exFAT, which is a format both Windows and Linux works with well. All my external drives get formatted as such.

I’m really confused on what you are talking about. Maybe you just need to consume a wider variety of media.
