Id like something that lets me wear my phone far away enough from my face but still enclosed so ot becomes like a mini movie theatre thats dark and everything
There used to be. They weren’t profitable enough so they were put down.

You can pick up any plastic headset that fits your phone for $25-40/£20-30. FWIW I heard Destek are good and bought one. They go through versions so it seems they’re in V5 now (Amazon link). Gotta try and keep the lenses of whichever headset you choose oil, dust and hair free when you close it so a microfibre cloth is highly recommended, or a sock.
Way, WAY back you used to be able to have a ratchet VR setup. Using TrinusVR, paired with the mobile app and desktop app, I was able to play Minecraft Java (and any other standard game) in VR, as well as Subnautica in VR mode. No need to drop £800 on a true VR rig.
Good news: TrinusVR still exists!

I still have one. It’s not very comfortable and you have to hold it in front off you all the time, so not really a movie watching solution. Nowadays phones are too large to fit anyways.
Iirc Samsung are going to make a VR headset, along with a $30 headset that takes a phone. $30 is on par with loads of step-ups from Cardboard - plastic. They’re not OSFA (one size fits all) though, at this point you need one that can take seven inches
You can get cheap phone vr headsets a google daydream or Samsung gear. Any would let you watch videos in vr, i think YouTube will still play 3d natively.
YouTube is a little bitch with 3D. A workaround to YT removing the dedicated VR button is to build a playlist with one (preferably short) 180° or 360° video, followed by all the ones you want to watch. Must in this order:
- disable autorotate
- manually full-screen
- activate 3D mode
- place phone in headset
- bonus: get comfortable, and get the video in the correct position by pressing the interactive button. If it’s askew you need to look away and press to move it, then rest and press again.
