AnAustralianPhotographer@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•*Permanently Deleted*English7·26 days agoWe don’t celebrate it. I think if you buy a calendar, it’ll have the day marked in it.
As a nation we aren’t heavily unionized. Maybe it’s because we.would have just had a public holiday.
Aussies have a public holiday on the 25th of April to remember the sacrifices of our soldiers. The day is called ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) day and there are dawn services.
The day was chosen as the day of the landings at Gallipoli in World War I and was seen as a bit of our emergence of a country in our own right than just another colony of the British Empire.
AnAustralianPhotographer@lemmy.worldto Science Memes@mander.xyz•Well, that's no ordinary rabbit!English18·1 month agoAnd the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

AnAustralianPhotographer@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you knew the internet was going to be shutdown, damaged, or colossally enshittified what software would you archive for use locally and use for a neighborhood/town mesh network? Why?English6·1 month agoRaspberry pi os , it can also be run on non raspberry pis*. all the recommended packages in its menu (libre office?) that should get you a nice os.
Some torrenting software to ensure you can help share it around.
I recently heard of something called a ‘Pirate box’ which is a WiFi router without a password and storage attached for people to upload and download stuff to / from .
I wouldn’t do it myself, but if it was a country town, it could be something similar to a virtual notice board in the pub.
- Might as well get Debian and Ubuntu too.

I miss getting a scroll from a fellow wizard which had all the runes you needed on it and it was also small enough it could fit in a pocket and if you had bad taste in music it even playered a bit of a dong as you were reading.
The old magic is also likely efficient because it had to be to work with the orbs at the time.

AnAustralianPhotographer@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are you permanently banned off reddit? or do you just like lemmy more?English5·2 months agoNot banned but I like here more. I left during the Exodus/ blackouts/shutdowns. In another life I was a mod for a moderately successful sub and after going into the rabbit hole and seeing the app timer increase to hours a day, I felt they could at least gift mods premium and they could skip ads. After some drama and a high caliber mod left the sub, I followed shortly after as the community has grown and changed.

Bullet train fast. But in terms of cars, he would have been driving around three times the highest legal limit I know of on highways in Australia (110km/hr). Its about as fast a formula 1 cars or out V8 cars going full speed.

AnAustralianPhotographer@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Recommendations for privacy-focused, open-source alternatives to corporate appsEnglish2·2 months agoEdit; now I went back and reread the question, I saw opens source. I will leave the comment as it could be a turnkey solution and stepping stone option to going full open source.
Something like a server on a raspberry pi could be what your after, but I don’t have specific software recommendations for it.
…
I’ve just started dabbling, so don’t consider this an expert, but a suggestion.
Synology nas’s have a focus on data sovereignty . They have Android apps that communicate from your phone to the Nas for media.
They can also be setup as a private cloud drive initially accessible by VPN to access and a email / web interface as well as instant messager and webdrive
I gave some though to setting up a small private ‘corporate’ style server where people could access . There’s no subscription fees after the initial hardware purchase as your self hosting.

My theory is the roundabouts have a calming effect.
