Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How, exactly, does one make a living as a mathematician?
106·7 days agoFinance, there’s a whole lot of arcane statistics underlying risk management.
Tech, the bleeding edge of computer science is really just applied math.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Why does every commercial depiction of honey involve one of this things? Literally nobody has ever seen one of these in real life
181·8 days agoHoney Dipper.
As long as you spin it (along the axis of the handle), the honey stays on the stick and doesn’t drip all over everything. When you stop spinning, it drips all over your food.
It’s a niche tool but 11/10 at its one job.
If you can afford $9/mo, YNAB (You Need A Budget) is a great app for managing income and expenses that don’t necessarily align on a calendar schedule.
I get that budgeting won’t make up for insufficient income, but if it’s actually the financial habits that are holding you back, this app works wonders for learning how to properly plan your expenses.
If you’re into open source stuff and are willing to spend more effort tinkering, ActualBudget is the same concept, but lacks some QoL features (notably, auto-importing transactions from your bank/credit card statements). But all the data stays in your hands, not some company, so that’s good.

Bob: “Well, DM probably only said that because of my shit roll, I bet there’s something here”
Lead pipes are less of an issue that it would seem, as the pipes quickly develop a layer of calcium salts on the inside, preventing the water from actually coming into contact with the lead.
By all means, they need replaced. But they’re nowhere near the contributor that leaded gasoline was. That stuff probably fucked up 6 distinct generations. If you lived in a city, you were inhaling lead constantly.

16·2 months agoAcorns are like the easiest thing to forage, though. I agree that foraging isn’t as simple for many people as the OP makes it out to be, but acorns are a bad counter example.
They are high in tannins, which your body is pretty good at processing in reasonable quantities (they’re in tea, coffee, and wine), but many acorns DO have unreasonable quantities of them and they can cause organ damage. Luckily, tannins are water soluble, so you just need to crack them open and soak them in water for a few days, then rinse and they’re safe to eat.

2·7 months agoPersonal/Family use is fine, it’s kinda fiddly but so is most selfhosted software.
At an organizational level, that fiddliness spirals into a ton of work, which doesn’t really overlap with other IT Duties in the way that troubleshooting OneDrive usually ends up solving problems with the whole Microsoft suite.

“The girls had cocaine, and the music was loud. It was total happiness. And both of them had long, red fingernails with an endless supply of beautiful white powder…The Feds spent a million bucks trying to figure out whether, when those fingernails passed under my nose, did I exhale or inhale, and I ain’t telling”
The US may affect the whole world less next year if everyone else works hard to find alternate markets, but it’s going to take longer than that for the rest of the world to totally detangle themselves from our mess.
It’s fine. For legal reasons (particularly in the EU and California) they had to add a Terms of Use fit the browser, and the had to translate a bunch of broad, idealist, simple phrases into legalese so they wouldn’t get killed by those governments.
I don’t think “mods per user” is that important of a metric. “Mods per daily/weekly/monthly post/comment” is a more useful gauge of a community’s activity.

Ohio = a bad place to be. Honestly, as a non-Ohio Midwesterner, I say this should be allowed.
Chat = like addressing the twitch chat. “Chat, are we doomed?” It’s actually pretty interesting from a linguistics perspective because it’s arguably a fourth person pronoun. But in-class I can see it getting out of hand.
