The whole idea of the phrase is the one living rent free is just enjoying their life while the OTHER person obsesses about them.

Yeah, that sounds wild. Ours were opt in programs with some testing etc. Coursework was hard but I still hardly had any for homework etc.
Got to skip a few university classes as ours counted for them though which was useful. And yeah, the more I think about that grad class (decades ago now) the more impressed I am with what some of those folks went on to do.
Wild, maybe Canada does ours differently? I was in 2 different programs over the years but we still had lunch, free blocks and still shot the shit a bunch in class. And then sports and other extra curriculars too.
Ehhh, to each their own. I was in those classes, fully separated streams. No idea why you’d assume having a more interesting class would nix social development. (You can’t learn to socialize if the teacher doesn’t have to slow down?)
Fully wide range of outcomes but a lot of the kids with the potential went and realized it. Sure, not all of us did but from my small circle one’s on the second highest court in Canada, one’s set up a reasonably famous company, one’s a cardiac surgeon etc.
I organize a few co-ed soccer teams. My Tuesday team all said whether they would or wouldn’t play without me having to nag anyone, which is always nice.
At work, a project I’ve been leading for what feels like an eternity just crossed the second last hump and most of my efforts towards it are done (for now until something explodes.)

You could listen to the teacher in the beginning. Or notice the constant jingoistic propaganda. Or watch any voice of reason be shouted down.
To each their own but especially these days, it’s important to notice that the road to authoritarianism isn’t a wild swerve from thr status quo but a slow, gradual drift.
Personally, I quite enjoy a movie that respects its audience enough to not have to have the bad guys murder babies for a reasonable viewer to catch on to the what’s going on.
It was fine as a adumb tits n ass action movie when I was 12, realized “hey, this is an actual movie” in my 20s. And that’s fine, if it is somehow too subtle for people, well, so is authoritarianism.
You might try piefed? It’s a fediverse platform so still links/syncs etc with lemmy and everywhere else but the UI is nice and I think it does a lot of the stuff you mention (except for the ama style stuff.) I followed PugJesus here (and am using Piefed right now) and exported all my feeds etc so the switch was relatively painless.

Not a real response, but this is a very nice comment and I think it’s the type of thing that makes the fediverse a better place.
I got one a few months ago that is my abslolute favourite, not sure if it counts. Important context, I’m 40 but still play soccer with folks as young as 20. So, one game I’m defending against a young fast kid and beat him to the ball (barely!) a few times in a row on long ball chases. After the third or fourth time he looks over after the race and says “You’re really fast for an… uhhh uh uh, you’re really fast!”
He meant so well and it was adorable watching him realize mid sentence that I probably didn’t want to be called an old man.
Oh interesting, I’ll look into that. I’ve always felt pretty tuckered after beach volleyball so just assumed that was somehow higher impact.

You’re fully right on the attitude. Part of why I love these teams is somehow we keep attracting just awesome groups of people so even though everyone plays their heart out, it’s still laughs and loves when we get ragdolled.
Interesting idea moving up to forward. I always joke about how scary that half of the field is but I’m not a terrible distributor and don’t mind just being bigger at people in the box…
I’ll definitely follow up with you at some point if you’re down. Right now, I’ve got to heal this dumb foot but then, yoga, the gym and maybe slowly transitioning to forward to get some practice there with friends before trying that on a new team.

Fully recommend ocean kayaking. My buddy had an attachment so he’d basically be trawling a fishing line behind the boat so more often than not, we’d have fresh caught, ready for dinner when we landed.

Ha, I fully get the appeal of getting away from the younglings! I’m lucky, I can still keep pace with most of them. Which led to my favourite accidental burn:
