It only checks mirror latency every transaction if you enable “fastestmirror”. Repositories are only synced if the local cache is out of date or the metadata timestamp has changed. There might be a way to prevent dnf from refreshing repository metadata at all, but I really don’t think that’s a good idea.

In my experience, dnf has pretty good mirror selection by default. Setting “fastestmirror=true” replaces the more complex mirrormanager2 heuristic, which tries to select an appropriate mirror by available bandwidth, with a simple latency check that runs before transactions. In most cases this has no effect or worsens dnfs performance. They changed the description in dnf5 to better reflect the behaviour.
Having said that, it’s worth giving a try in a case like this. I just want to make sure that people realize that there is a reason this was never enabled by default, since this is a popular configuration tweak suggested all over the internet, whose actual function very few seem to know.

9·1 month agoThere is nuance here and it’s up to medical professionals and researchers to find the right balance. The biggest source of the unnecessary usage of antibiotics is rampant over-prescription, not taking a few more doses after the first second you feel better. Rebounding with a more resilient infection after stopping antibiotics early is still a relevant concern and happens frequently.

Linux@lemmy.ml•GNOME & Firefox Consider Disabling Middle Click Paste By Default: "An X11'ism...Dumpster Fire"
251·1 month agoThere are programs that use the middle mouse button but also support pasting from clipboard. I’ve been annoyed at work plenty of times when I’m trying to translate across a canvas but accidentally paste a random node of text. Bonus points if it contains some kind of password that was still in your clipboard. I don’t think it’s a good default.

Programming@programming.dev•Software taketh away faster than hardware giveth: Why C++ programmers keep growing fast despite competition, safety, and AI
19·1 month agoThe choice of programming language for new projects almost always comes down to the existing ecosystem and its popularity in the space you’re working in. Some of the most popular languages also have the advantage of being deeply embedded in the academic pipelines educating newcomers to the field, which obviously includes C++. Being one of the worst choices for a first programming language to learn hasn’t stopped C++ yet and likely won’t for a long time to come.

15·3 months agoThe internet would be a much quieter place if people were forced to have a minimal amount of insight into the topic they’re posting about. I guess what really annoys me is when popular blogs like this one deliberately frame something they don’t like in a way that makes it look worse to people who don’t know any better. There are very few people calling this shit out, be it on lemmy or the comments of the article itself. They even lied about FL1 being “bullet-proof” and “unaffected” by this bug, when it clearly wasn’t, according to Cloudflare - the primary source of this shitstain of an article.

442·3 months agoI swear some of these commenters will jerk each other off about how “Rust is bad, actually” even if the root cause of an issue was someone intentionally crashing their app. Where do you even get this kind of attitude from? I’ve been around when Rust was the popular topic in any programming-related discussions and while there was plenty of evangelism and CS-101 experts making wild claims, nothing warrants this kind of irrational hatred. I thought you need to go to the phoronix forums to find people who have such loud opinions with very little actual programming experience, but apparently I was wrong.

281·3 months agoThere’s an argument to be made that it’s too high of a cut, especially these days. A lot of this money has funded great improvements to the gaming ecosystem and many open source projects. The major competing storefronts/launchers do not come even slightly close to the feature set that Steam provides, but they have tried attracting users through exclusivity deals. It’s very telling that some successful competitors (like itch or gog) actually offer some unique benefits and aren’t attached to some incredibly controversial corporations…
Valve isn’t free from criticism and their role as a monopolist should definitely be scrutinized, especially as companies often radically change for the worse in behaviour and culture, but a lot of this critical attention was instigated by Epic CEO Tim Sweeney who can frankly gargle my nuts.

Being able to own a car without a license probably isn’t the main cause behind the rise in these statistics. At least I’m not convinced that requiring a DL to own one will do any good. Many countries don’t require a license to own or even register a car and have far better traffic accident statistics.
At least in Germany, most unlicensed drivers are just the ones that continue driving after having their license revoked, which explains why they are a big source of accidents. This also means however, that most of them have completed their driver training at least once. From what I’m reading it sounds like in NY, administrative chaos during covid has caused some people to just not get a license at all? If so, then the most obvious solution to me is lowering administrative hurdles for getting a license. In car-dependent places like the US and Germany, it’s very difficult to prevent people from driving a car at all. So, why not focus instead on making sure the people who need to drive can get a license?
