Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Anti-AI people, did you ever like AI? If so, when did you stop?
4·2 months agoAI reviewing medical imaging/labs and flagging abnormal findings for review by a doctor is awesome.
AI spamming social media to push fascist propaganda is not.

I refuse to give my money to fascists if it’s at all avoidable. I will inconvenience myself and pay more for alternatives, or forego things completely if I can’t make a compelling argument for having them.
I have yet to hear such an argument for a streaming service.

Technology@lemmy.world•‘I’m a modern-day luddite’: Meet the students who don’t use laptopsEnglish
2·4 months agoI had a math teacher in highschool that allowed us make a “cheat sheet” during tests – it had to be hand written on an index card. I discovered that if I actually made a “cheat sheet” I rarely needed to look at it. It’s the same for hand-written lists when I’m shopping.
For a lot of people there’s something about actually writing information down (by hand) the makes it “stick” better in memory.

Technology@lemmy.world•‘I’m a modern-day luddite’: Meet the students who don’t use laptopsEnglish
2·4 months agoI did something insane: I actually read the article.
The students interviewed used pen and paper because they lack the tempting distractions a laptop/tablet/phone has. One states they feel they “use their brain more” when using a pen and paper. They also mention using a computer to write the final version of an essay for submission, but do most of the work on pen and paper first for the aforementioned reasons.
As long as you’re not being a shitbag: who the fuck cares? Some people don’t like hookups, some do – and it can change depending on circumstances and what phase or like one is at.
Every day I become more convinced a lot of people get stuck at “teenager” when it comes to sex and relationships. It’s not hard: don’t be an asshole, don’t hurt people, and do what makes you happy.

I’d call what you linked to “deranged, but fascinating.”
It’s charming mix of “freshman humanities student” and “2012 tumblr”.

Seriously though, quality 4k media is hard to find outside of … “finding it” on the internet.
Native Americans are still people, and it’s a universal truth that people (as a whole) suck. I’m not excusing the horrors that came with colonization: but wars, slavery, murder, etc were still common things in America prior to colonization – just at a much smaller scale.
All the horrible things people do to each other are just easier when you’re not stuck using stone-age technology.

Technology@lemmy.world•UK Official Calls for Age Verification on VPNs to Prevent Porn LoopholeEnglish
10·4 months agoIt’s funny, because that’s exactly what I did around the age of 13 to bypass my school’s firewall. I had everything on a USB drive, including Ghostzilla and PuTTY so I could browse through an SSH SOCKS tunnel. Mind you, my home computer was the SSH server – but these days it wouldn’t be hard to get a VPS in a less restrictive country:
“Hey [parent], can I borrow your credit card to set up a server so my friends and I can play [game] together?”
It takes one kid in a group to set something like this up.

My gaming computer isn’t – as much as I would like it to be. There are certain things (particularly VR) that don’t want to work well in Linux.
Weird … It looks like there’s nothing stopping me from signing up for an account on dbzer0 even though I’m not actually an anarchist.
It means “quick marriage because the bride is pregnant” and that is 100% the origin of the phrase.
Particularly in poorer, rural parts of the USA having a child out of wedlock was incredibly shameful, and the financial burden of a single motherhood was intolerable. So the bride’s family would ensure the man responsible married their daughter … regardless of how he felt about it. Sometimes that meant having a shotgun at the wedding to ensure he didn’t run off.
