yup in the early to mid 10’s every company, startup, etc offshored to India and the drivel that came back was about on par with today’s AI/LLMs. just complete garbage that either needed heavy refactoring or just start over from scratch with competent devs. So seeing all this with AI today I can only think “I’ve seen this episode before”

honestly as much as you can tolerate it. But once you start gaining traction then get off it.

like it or not linkedin and replying to tech bros posts calling them out. eventually a desperate upper manager or cto or ceo will notice and contact me to fix their fuck up. I used to just do contract dev work but I got tired of constantly reading bullshit on linkedin while trying to get work. so I started replying to the bullshit. eventually people seeing my replies figured I knew what I was talking about and would contact me for help. Now I get gigs purely from word of mouth.

It was March or April of 2008 and I worked in the porn industry as a web developer and moderator for user submitted content sites. One site in particular that I managed was gaytube which at the time was owned by Twisty’s/Pink Visual/Carsed Marketing. As a moderator for gaytube it was my responsibility to approve or deny all user submitted content to the site. and there was a lot of it. daily. Affiliate content got approved regardless but users had to be vetted. enter a guy from Eastern Europe named Alexi or Alex.

He’d submit stuff constantly of shoving things up his ass. like whatever it was. food, random objects, whatever. One day in March or April of 2008 he submitted this clip. all of it. in it’s entirety. I watched it. I was one of if not the first person OTHER than Alexi to watch this thing. so. much. blood.

Naturally I had to deny it. But even after denying a clip I still had access to the upload. Now since I was in the industry I had access to all the industry forums and other user sites that people in the industry would use like the message board “gofuckyourself” (seriously, that’s what it was called). I was on speaking terms with the guy that ran efukt and I would always share with him weird shit via gofuckyourself that would get submitted to one of the many sites I worked on like the victorian era E.T. porn or the duct tape ninja turtles porn for example. So I decided to send him this clip. he uploaded it. the rest is history.

as someone who deals directly with these CEOs and their startups/small companies, no it doesn’t surprise me. I deal with them on a daily basis. they’re all collectively idiots that somehow fell into a barrel full of thumbs and came out sucking tits. They learned catch phrases and linkedin buzzwords and have the ability to con investors who are arguably more stupid than the CEOs.

My entire lively hood is based purely off their collective idiocy. they utilize AI/LLM’s for builds, they fire virtually all their senior dev teams, then when things naturally go south they hire me to come in and pay me, honeslty, WAY more than I should be paid to code review their AI slop and tell them how fucked they are. that’s literally my job now. All they know are buzzwords and the ability to throw money at a problem that will then hopefully vanish but it never does.

I’ve had conversations with some of these morons where they’ve openly admitted to me that they “asked chatgpt and it said we should do this and this” so this CEO asking chatgpt for legal advice does not surprise me at all.

What i’ve learned is to get ahead in life all you need to do is abandon all your ethics and morals, learn some catchy buzzwords, and be a complete moron. The world then rewards you for it.

Because if you donate to a FOSS project you’re likely not looking for the attention, adoration, and possible “maybe they’ll date me” from the developer. People who pay A LOT to onlyfans models are looking for that. It’s the same reason people donate to twitch streamers. They want the attention, they want the acknowledgement.

yeah it was “all the rage” in the early 00’s up to like the early 10’s. Pain in the ass to build, even worse to maintain and update. but EVERYONE wanted a cool interactive flash site. It’s just trends with companies. I remember after flash it was all paralax. everyone wanted paralax. thankfully that was a lot easier to build since it was just HTML5. but yeah web dev trends are annoying because you’re constantly having to learn new stacks that you know will become irrelevant in like 3 years or less once some middle manager discovers something “cool”.

I’m all about using Astro + Tailwind because it reminds me of building Geocities sites and I like that.

yeah it was fine to play games on or see neat websites but it was absolute garbage to build and maintain with.

fresh out of college one of my first jobs was a web master for an ad agency whose site was purely built in flash/actionscript. It was the absolute worst to update. I hated it. I was one of those that celebrated flash and actionscripts downfall.

for repacks it’s mixed. some work fine, others not so much. Generally you want to try and install them via Lutris or Heroic Game Launcher. Like the newest Star Trek Voyager game I couldn’t get installed at all. I’m on Arch Linux and tried it via Lutris. The fitgirl repack just doesn’t complete the install for whatever reason. I think I just need to fiddle around with different proton versions but I got tired of dealing with it.

I’m honestly surprised no one is talking about this more. It’s not like all these guys just suddenly decided “you know what? we should stop raping children” after Epstein was “caught”. if you talk to it long enough it will tell you to do stupid shit.

Every time an LLM responds it reads the entire conversation over. from original prompt to last entry, just constantly reading the entire log over and over everytime you add something new. So after awhile, a long while, it’ll “break down”. Hallucinations will be come common, context will get jumbled up, it’ll sort of degrade over time because it has to re-read everything over and over so it will naturally fuck up.

It’s like if you were reading a book and every time you read a new sentence you had to go back and start the book over. every time. after awhile you’d likely lose context, start messing stuff up in the story, etc. this is what happens to LLMs.

So for cases like this or others where you read stories about AI telling people to do weird or stupid shit chances are the person using the LLM has been talking to it for A LONG TIME at that point. It was even worse on the previous versions of GPT where if you hit a limit on the free tier it would just drop you down to the previous model thus the further likely hood of hallucinations.

well to be fair the previous two times at least they came up with some kind of excuse for it. this time? nadda.

there are a couple youtube channels I recently discovered that do just that. take REALLY old computers and parts and try to make them semi-viable for modern computing. and I’m talking stuff that is easily nearly 30+ years old.

BoomerTec and Action Retro. BoomerTec I really like as he’ll just pick up random old PCs and explain all the parts inside and even give a history on them. His vids are like really awesome relaxing sunday morning watches. He even finds FOSS stuff that will still work on really old pcs. because of his channel I even discovered forks of firefox that are still actively developed for 32bit or community builds of Windows XP that are still updated today. For example his recent vid he bought a PC from 1998 off Ebay and got Firefox, Photoshop, and OpenOffice working on it. even games.

Action Retro pretty much does the same thing but with a focus on Linux. He’s done videos of taking like old Compaqs from the 90s and getting linux running on them. Really impressive stuff.

Veronica Explains is also good for this. Her video of taking old chromebooks and getting linux working on them is very detailed and thorough. Extremely easy to follow even for first timers. Also what I like about Veronica Explains is her videos remind me of old TechTV Screen Savers and Call for Help.

for my dev work and workflow learning how to effectively use the terminal and use it for just about everything.

Once you figure it out and use a good terminal IDE using your computer just becomes faster. It’s faster than using a GUI for everything. Utilizing the terminal and a tiling Window Manager also makes using the mouse obsolete. I don’t use a mouse or touchpad for anything other than gaming now. using the mouse slows me down.

I can manage everything on my computer now and multiple programs with 2 terminal windows. or simply manage everything within DOOM Emacs.

that’s another program I strongly suggest people check out and learn. DOOM Emacs is my go to IDE, Terminal, Email client, Git Manager, and File Manager. does all that and does it all well.
