I think of it as another bug in the Human Build 1.0, along with getting an eyelash in your eye and tripping over nothing. Once 2.0 comes out they will surely have all this stuff fixed.

Stop Forgetting It@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Science Memes@mander.xyz•Least extreme biophysics phdEnglish7·4 months agoIts is semantics, but also this is science and semantics are important. If we want to get really in to semantics we should say the experiments were done on humans, as the embryo, fetus, baby, toddler, pre-teen, teenager, and adult are all phases of the human life cycle and this experiment was done to produce genetically modified humans. Even CRISPR experiments refer to the organism model when experimenting, not the life cycle phase, unless it is specifically part of the experiment IE: in vitro vs In vivo
Saying the medical experiments were done on babies specifically is for the shock value, and it works, look at the reactions it gets. This should be a hotly debated topic, people should be concerned about the ethics of gene editing and how it is regulated. This experiment was not ethical in anyway and it was criminal, but using hyperbole to inflate the shock value for engagement is also not the way to communicate how unethical and criminal this is.
Stop Forgetting It@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Science Memes@mander.xyz•Least extreme biophysics phdEnglish182·4 months agoI totally agree, I do believe what he did was unethical and criminal.
I also believe the clarification on if the experimenting was done on live human babies or if it was done on human embryos is exceeding important. Implying that this was done on live human babies is basically misinformation. Just look at the rest of this thread and how people are talking about this, everyone is discussing this as if its was living, breathing, crying babies that were experimented on, not a clump of cells before they have any type of living functionality.
If anything what you said should be included, he experimented on embryos with the intent of them being born and becoming babies. But it most definitely should not be “he carried out medical experiments on babies”, because that is patently untrue.
Stop Forgetting It@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Science Memes@mander.xyz•Least extreme biophysics phdEnglish1098·4 months agoI think a really exceeding important clarification here is he edited the genomes of human embryos, not babies. Babies are already born humans, embryos are a clump of cells that will become a baby in the future. I do not condone gene editing without consent, which is what he did, and yes there is lots of questionable ethics around gene editing but he did NOT experiment on babies. This should be made clear especially in a science based community, memes or not.
Implying that babies are the same thing as embryos is fundamentally incorrect, in the same way a caterpillar is not a butterfly and a larva is not a fly, the distinction is very important.
EDIT To add further detail - One of the reasons this is so unethical is that he experimented on human embryos that were later born and became babies. His intent was always to create a gene edited human, but the modifications were done while they were embryos, not live babies.

I happen to have not one but two Motorola droids with slide out keyboards. The keyboard is a full plastic sheet that has raised buttons for the keys, so no dirt can get under the keys, but as you can see here although dirt can accumulate on the keyboard itself, this doesn’t effect the sliding. https://streamable.com/9g509h

Gender-affirming care/medication more commonly given to cis people than it is given to trans people. Mostly because the trans* population is in reality very small, it just feels like there is more trans people than there really is because they are hated on so much and so loudly. The biggest problem that that most people don’t recognize cis gender affirming care as “gender affirming”, because the term is applied to heavily to trans* healthcare and not at all used for cis healthcare unless you are in a scientific setting. These types of experiments named here are in reality run for cis people, not trans, because hormones can effect so many things and its not very widely studied how they interact with many medications, like HIV medications.
Hormone therapy is used for a variety of reasons that are not necessarily gender dysphoria. Hormones have a HUGE effect on all aspects of your body and cis or trans* a hormone imbalance can be horrible.
Lots of cismen take testosterone as they get older because as they age their body does not generate as much as it did when they were younger. Insufficient levels of testosterone in men may lead to abnormalities including frailty, accumulation of adipose fat tissue within the body, anxiety and depression, sexual performance issues, and bone loss.
Conversely lots of ciswomen will take estrogen and progesterone to counter the effects of menopause, when their bodies start to produce less hormones. Lack of estrogen for women can lead to many of the menopause symptoms such as irritability, brain fog, hair loss, joint pain, weight gain, bone loss, hot flashes and cold sweats.
Many cancers are also hormone fed, most common would be hormone positive breast cancer. AFAB Breast cancer survivors cannot take estrogen or progesterone hormone therapy like most cis women can because it increases the chances of it feeding the tumor. Testing if they can take testosterone is still very new in the research process, considering they didn’t start doing ANY hormone therapy research until after the turn of the century.
Other examples of cis gender affirming care is hair plugs, breast implants, breast reconstruction after mastectomy, any type of genital reconstruction, gynecomastia treatment for cismen, and so on…
TL:DR These experiments are for cis medical care, not trans. The only reason they were targeted is because of the phase"trans" and the phase “gender affirming”.

Stop Forgetting It@lemmy.dbzer0.comto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If nothing happens after we die, what's the point of it all?English81·5 months agoWhy does there have to be a point? I have no legacy, I’ll never pass anything to the next generation, I have and will not ever make anything that changes the course of humankind, the world will probably not be a better place after I am gone. But I still feel happiness when I see a beautiful sunset, I laugh when my dog does something goofy and I smile when I see others expressing real joy. I don’t have to have a direction to still enjoy life while I am here to enjoy it.
