Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
3·12 days ago- The great awakening (the original woke, bit ironic now, ain’t it?)
- Redeemer / post reconstruction era
- Fascism after the New Deal
- McCarthyism
- The “Contract With America”
I should probably throw in the Gilded Age too as it seems to fit with our current situation nicely. We had a decent progressive push after the last one. History rhymes, so here’s hoping.
And yes, Australia is probably great. Would love to visit one day. However, politically, It has been led by their conservative party for the majority of two decades now - and has outsized influence from China due to it being a major importer of Ozzie’s natural resources.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
92·13 days agoI have family here, I have a house here. I’ve built a life here.
Canada’s great but cold. Europe would require me to rebuild everything in my life. Plus, Europe is dealing with their own problems at the moment - its own rise of the right; the threat of Russia. In Australia, everything wants to kill you or cause you great pain, even the plants. South America seems enticing, but the US affords more opportunity for now, so maybe when I retire.
Everywhere you look, the deeper you look, you realize that everywhere has their own problems. Times change, seasons change. Right now we’re in a conservative phase. We’ve been here before. So instead, I’ll stand my ground and weather it out with the allies I have around me. I’d much prefer to be part of the resistance anyway.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•My mom says that people who don't have "value" don't deserve to live and that "depression" is just an excuse for laziness. What's is your rebuttal for it?
31·14 days agoRight? If I had a mom like that I’d be depressed too.
Oh wait, I did, and I was.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does anyone actually like... talk to extended family/relatives? Like an active effort to maintain relations and not just because of forced family gatherings?
191·19 days agoRelationships are incredibly important for living a long and fulfilling life.
One of the most common regrets of those nearing the end of their life:
“I wish I had stayed in touch with the people who mattered.”
It also has a protective factor to your health too.
Now, does that mean that you have to force yourself to like those extended relatives? No, of course not. Just like any other people, you must make the assessment whether these people are on the whole a benefit or a deterrent to you.
But being a family member often grants you a quick on-ramp to foster those relationships.
We all often say it’s too hard, we’re too busy. And I’d argue that if you find value in it, then you’re going to do it with intention and make the time.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are your honest thoughts about cryptocurrencys?
1·19 days agoI agree. I was an early adopter. It’s a compelling idea to have a public ledger, but so far it’s been terrible execution, and what a disaster for the environment.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the best YouTube video that you watched in 2025?
5·23 days agoThis documentary about the Japanese Holocaust on the Chinese. It got demonetized because of the details and unfortunately TIFO has stepped back somewhat from their long form documentaries partly because of it.
And when you’re done crying to that, here’s something a little more light hearted from Jim McKenzie that went under the radar.
I thought it was invented by John Campbell, right before he saved the Japanese from corporate sabotage.
And his dog, Chunky.
Man, he loved that dog.

I’m starting to realize high quality organic coffee is a thing too.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•My GF gave me one afternoon to fix this, what do i do
10·2 months agoBest bet short term is to rig something that dulls the noise. A few insulated panels would do, so long as the heat isn’t too intense, but will have the unfortunate effect of reducing the heat to your residence, so you’ll need to augment that somehow. If there’s air in the line, then it’s probably not working to its fullest potential anyway.
Long term, I agree with everyone else. Have the super hire a professional. This is not one you want to DIY, especially while it’s operational. I’ve done carpentry, wiring and plumbing. I’d never touch steam, doubly so while it’s running.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would be the most optimal way to have good bodily nutrition with the lowest cost per meal?
3·2 months agoPumpkin is one of my favorite things to add to chili. It serves as a thickener and makes the flavor richer, more bodied.
Chopped Sweet potato is a vegetarian chili addition. I’m personally mixed on it, but it compliments the beans well.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would be the most optimal way to have good bodily nutrition with the lowest cost per meal?
171·2 months agoBeans and rice has been the poor man’s nutritional meal for millennia. Throw in a plantain or chicken or tofu occasionally for supplemental nutrients / protein. Add hot sauce for heat. Don’t forget to add salt to taste.
It’s cheap, nutritional and has the added benefit of being tasty.
Chili is another option - tomato, beans a can of pumpkin as filler, maybe a sweet potato. Pepper and onions for taste and some TVP or Beyond Meat crumbles for some chewiness…or ground Turkey if you eat meat. It’s simple and can sustain you for a week. Spice it up with chili powder and cumin, maybe some garlic salt and a lime. I made a crockpot full the other day. There’s a reason cowboys out in the prairie ate this stuff.

Shew, what a headline. Keep in mind that AI is not just all LLM. I’m not sure how much more juice we can squeeze out of LLMs, but we’re just scratching the surface with other prediction models.
The ability to have smart cars that improve fuel efficiency by adjusting to traffic conditions may very well compensate for the increased electricity demand created by data centers.
New chemistry models may finally help us produce batteries that can meet the demands of a renewable energy grid.
We’re standing at a precipice. What we’re doing as a society is not working today - it’s not sustainable. And I’m not shy to say that I’m one of the few here on ActivityPub that think we may be able to leverage AI to dig us out of this hole we’ve started to dig ourselves in. But, in order to do that, we need clear heads, with clear goals and the incentives to encourage others to execute on them.
What we’re doing right now, just complaining about what’s not working isn’t going to save us.
