Oh boy. It’s one of the primary precursors for PMMA (acrylic) resin, though I don’t know specifically why an aerospace plant would need so damn much of it. On the scale of bad chemicals MMA needs relatively high concentrations to be immediately outright hazardous via exposure, but it’s a seriously aggressive sensitizer so anyone downwind of the spill has a real risk of developing an allergy to plasticizers… and that’s assuming this doesn’t catch fire/explode spectacularly. Fucking hell, going to be an interesting WTYP on how this got fucked up.

“This is gonna happen unless some brilliant guy behind me here figures out how we can mitigate this incident,” Covey said at a news conference Friday afternoon. “This thing is gonna fail. We don’t know when.”

This is so wild to me. I have no idea what California is like but I am subject to such onerous environmental emergency laws it’s unimaginable that a plan doesn’t exist.

I tried to watch the video the local police posted on X and, it’s not playing because I don’t have X.

They could just polymerize it in sunlight. It just needs to be mixed with a sensitizer.
