Not sure if they updated the article, but it currently says the tank “is estimated to contain 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a “highly volatile” and “highly flammable” toxic substance used in the production of plastic.”
Oh boy. It’s one of the primary precursors for PMMA (acrylic) resin, though I don’t know specifically why an aerospace plant would need so damn much of it. On the scale of bad chemicals MMA needs relatively high concentrations to be immediately outright hazardous via exposure, but it’s a seriously aggressive sensitizer so anyone downwind of the spill has a real risk of developing an allergy to plasticizers… and that’s assuming this doesn’t catch fire/explode spectacularly. Fucking hell, going to be an interesting WTYP on how this got fucked up.
